SCHOOL HISTORY
During the 19th century the old folks of Canaoay attended their schooling far from their houses. They spent hours walking just to reach the school of Gabaldon known as San Fernando Community School of San Fernando, La Union which is now named as South Central Integrated School of the City of San Fernando, La Union
It was in 1935 when Pagudpud Elementary School was established and in 1941 Poro Elementary School was born. Since then the schools catered the students of Canaoay, San Francisco, Parian, Madayegdeg and San Vicente.
Some good men of both Barangay Canaoay and San Vicente of the booming City of San Fernando, La Union conceived of an Elementary School in 1952 so that their children will not go either Poro or Pagudpud Elementary School. They convinced Mr. paulino Vinluan and rented his house as the place for a combination class of Grades I and II with Mrs. Vicenta Gacayan as the first teacher. In 1952, they organized the Parent-Teachers Association (PTA) and elected Mr. Fructuoso M. Pacio as the President. They were worried due to the growing enrolment for the years to come. The PTA suggested that there should be a permanent site for the school. Mr Fructuoso M. Pacio and his family donated the present site with an area of 3,393 sq. m. Since then the school is named Canaoay Elementary School.
After a fruitful year in 1953, the PTA constructed a 2- classroom makeshift building of light materials with sawali and bamboo walls and nipa roof west of the California Avenue now called the Lorenzo L. Dacanay Avenue and east of newly improved soon to be the International Airport of San Fernando City. Due to the increased in enrolment and number of teachers, Mrs. Vicente Gacayan was promoted to Head Teacher. Then in 1962, these good men Paulino Vinluan, Fructuoso M. Pacio, Mariano Apilado and others approved a resolution and solicited the late Governor Juvenal K. Guerrero for the construction of 6 Classroom Bagong Lipunan School Building through the helped of Francisco Umel and Pantaleon Pimentel and is the oldest permanent building of the school at present. The Head Teacher then was Mrs. Adoracion Balanon, while Mrs. Vicente Gacayan was transferred to another school.
Great changes were made from 1964 until 1984 during the time of Mrs. Carmelita Manabat, the Head Teacher of this school. The School purchased an additional lot of 750sq. m. at the Southern most part of the school through the PTA Fund Raising Proceeds. In this site rose the Fil-Chinese of commerce Building, with ; the 2 classroom conventional building and the 3 classroom World Bank (LOGO fine) Building. This made the total land area of 5,840 sq. m. where ten (10) buildings were constructed and the half-complete multi-purpose shade donated by Governor Manuel C. Ortega. In April 2011, the front area of the school was cemented and is now converted into a Concrete Pavement with a complete drainage system. It was in July 29, 2011 when the school stage was renovated for a more comfortable and pleasing appearance.
